Is My Windshield Covered?

We often get calls about chipped or cracked windshields. Many times, people ask, “Is my windshield covered?” Like most insurance questions, it’s a bit convoluted. If you have comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance glass is covered, but it is subject to your comprehensive deductible.

Deductibles

In most cases the comprehensive deductible is typically about $500 to $1000 per occurrence. You can usually replace a windshield, unless it’s high-end, for less than that. With that being said, more and more windshields are having extra sensors added in and additional extras which make the cost go up. We’ve actually had windshield claims over $2,000 in the more technical, fancier vehicles.

Additional Coverage for Glass

Some carriers offer an endorsement that specifically lowers the comprehensive deductible for a glass claim, or removes the deductible all together. However, the glass endorsement can cost you anywhere from $5 – $10 per month. So, if you only have a broken windshield every two or three years, that coverage you’ve been paying every month pretty much covers the cost of your windshield.

Summary

In conclusion, your auto insurance may cover damage to glass if you carry comprehensive. But unless you have a separate endorsement that lowers your glass deductible, the deductible would be the same as the comprehensive one on your policy.
